RunCadence was created by two physical therapists with the aim of assisting the running community in applying step rate to running through real-time step rate notifications and a metronome. The RunCadence App integrates with the HealthKit on your iOS device for seamless use.
Cadence, defined as the number of steps per minute (spm), is a straightforward metric that aids runners in reducing their step length to minimize the impact shock upon landing. Recent studies have emphasized the significance of cadence in addressing common running-related injuries (RRIs). Even a modest five percent increase in step rate, while keeping running speed constant, has been proven to reduce knee-level shock absorption by 20 percent. Moreover, elevating cadence by 10 percent beyond the preferred rate results in a wider step width and a more uniform foot placement, providing clear advantages for runners independent of their foot strike pattern.
Begin utilizing RunCadence to enhance your running performance. While there are no quick fixes or shortcuts to running, gait retraining using cadence serves as a valuable alternative.
We urge runners to undergo the one-minute baseline test available under “TEST” to establish their unique cadence. Upon completion, you will receive cadence values of +2.5%, +5%, +7.5%, and +10% above your preferred rate, which hold significance based on scientific consensus. These values can then be utilized as targets during your training sessions.
